March highlights

A few things to look out for in March

On Sunday 1 March there are several half marathons including Berkhamsted, Brands Hatch and Eastbourne, but the one with the biggest potential Serpie turnout is the Bath Half marathon. On the same day, there'll be some trail running Serpies at the Steyning Stinger marathon over the South Downs.

The annual Serpie training trip to Lanzarote gets under way on Thursday 5 March, with 100+ Serpies heading to sunnier climes for some serious training (and relaxing). For those still in the UK, Saturday 7 March is the day of the third club handicap of the year. If you haven't run the handicap before you can find out more about this regular monthly event, open to all club members. On the same day there are a couple of late season cross country events: the annual men's (Ellis Trophyand women's (Dysart Cupinter-club cross country races in Richmond Park; and the UK Inter Counties Cross Country Championships, held at Cofton Park, Birmingham. Entries for the Middlesex Masters cross country championships will close at midnight on 7 March.

On Sunday 8 March there are a couple of chances for a 20-mile race pre London marathon, with the Finchley 20 and Thames Riverside 20m both taking place. On the same day there's also the Roding Valley half marathon and the Dartford Bridge Duathlon.

The following weekend has a plethora of races, with the Shakespeare marathon & half marathon on Saturday 14 March and the Dartford half marathon, Kingston run challenge, North London half marathon, Wimbledon half marathon and Barcelona marathon all on Sunday 15 March. For those who prefer something shorter (and warmer), the Hertforshire, Middlesex and Kent indoor Track & Field championships are on at Lee Valley on both days.

The end of season cross country social will be on Wednesday 18 March – all who ran or helped out at any of the cross country events during the season are very welcome. A few Serpies will be in France on Saturday 21 March for the Eco Trail de Paris, while Sunday sees the first of the 2015 club road race championships: the Reading half marathon. Also on Sunday 22 March are the Rome marathon and Middlesex Masters cross country championships.

The March Brooks Serpentine Last Friday of the Month 5k will be on Friday 27 March. The Orion 15, on Saturday 28 March, is a hard race, but one that usually proves very popular with Serpies. Then on Sunday 29 March there will be several Serpie teams representing the club at the SEAA 6 & 12 stage road relays in Milton Keynes. Also on that Sunday is the next in the series of winter duathlons at the QEOP - this one organised by Serpentine, so any members offering to help will be very welcome. Taking place on the same day are also the London Fields Aquathlon, Paddock Wood half marathon and Berlin half marathon.

Looking forward to early April, on Saturday 4 April it's the next club handicap and the (slightly longer!) South Downs Way 50 mile. Easter Monday sees the first of this season's London Triathlon League events: the Thames Turbo Sprint Tri.

There's more information about lots of these events on the Serpie events planner.
