July highlights

A few of the events to look out for in July

We're now well into the summer track and field season and the fourth 2014 Rosenheim League meeting will be on Wednesday 2 July at Battersea. It is our home match and we need lots of Serpie helpers as well as athletes -  if you can help out (no experience necessary) please contact Stephanie Vaatz. The club handicap will be on Saturday 5 July and on Sunday 6 July there's a 5-mile Summer League race in Perivale. Both the handicap and summer league races can be entered on the day. In contrast, the nine members of the Serpie Ironman squad signed up to Frankfurt Ironman many, many months ago and we wish them all a great race.

The final Grand Prix event of the summer – the club championship 1-mile – will be held on Tuesday 8 July at Paddington track. We hope lots of Serpies (not only the faster ones, although they are, of course, very welcome) will come along and run. You can register on the night. On Wednesday 9 July we hope many of the Serpentine juniors will be competing at the WLAN track & field open meeting at Perivale track.

Battersea track is the venue for the club's home SAL track & field meeting which takes place on Saturday 12 July. We need plenty of helpers as well as athletes to ensure that the fixture goes well. If you can help out (no experience necessary) contact Stephanie Vaatz; and if you would like to compete, please contact the team captains. On the same Saturday, a group of Serpies will be running the Sri Chinmoy 10k, also in Battersea; and others will be covering the same distance at the British 10k on Sunday 13 July.

It will be back to Battersea Park again for some on Monday 14 July for the Sri Chinmoy 2-mile; and to Perivale track for others for the Southern Vets League track & field meeting. July's Last Friday of the Month 5k has been brought forward by a week and will take place on Friday 18 July.

On Sunday 20 July the Summer League 10k in Regents Park is also the club's 10k championship. With 32 Serpies already listed on My Events, it should provide some great racing for all. Also on that Sunday, Serpentine is organising a duathlon at the Olympic Park and we need a few helpers to make this happen. Helpers will be rewarded with the chance to make use of our exclusive velopark road circuit slot at the Olympic Park on Sunday 3 August.

Monday 21 July is the next Sri Chinmoy 5k in Battersea Park and on Wednesday 23 July it's the last chance this season to take part in a Rosenheim League track & field meeting, this time at Tooting Bec. As last summer's guided walk in place of the July 'Meal of the Month' proved so popular, we'll be repeating the idea this summer, with a guided walk around Soho on Friday 25 July. Lots of Serpies will be Switzerland-bound for the various different swissalpine races in Davos on Saturday 26 July.

In a very exciting and proud moment for the club, on Sunday 27 July our very own Nick Torry will be running the Commonwealth Games marathon in Glasgow representing England. For the many Serpies who won't be in Glasgow to watch the Games, we're aiming to book a venue for people to get together to watch Nick's run on tv and cheer him on in true Serpie fashion.

Looking ahead into early August, the first Saturday (2 August) will be a particularly busy one, with the August handicap in the morning, a SAL track & field meeting at Thurrock in the afternoon and the Serpentine summer party in the evening!

Finally, Wednesday 6 August is the final date for the nominations for the new club committee to be received by the club secretary (full details will be published in the official Notice of AGM in due course). You can read more about the committee and what is does here and find the nomination form here. The new committee will be elected at the club's AGM, which will take place on Wednesday 20 August.

There's more information about lots of these events on the Serpie events planner.
